Pet overpopulation: It's an easy problem to fix
Placer SPCA Offers Subsidized Program to Help with the Cost
Homeless animals are preventable. Very simply, spay or neuter your cats, dogs, and rabbits, and you help prevent pet overpopulation. Through its Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP), Placer SPCA offers subsidized vouchers to help with the cost.
By partnering with 19 area veterinary clinics, the Placer SPCA offers highly subsidized vouchers for spay and neuter surgery. Placer County residents can have pitbull and pitbull mix dogs spayed or neutered for only $25. Feral and free-roaming cats can be spayed or neutered for the minimal cost of only $5. Placer SPCA will even loan humane traps to help capture feral and free-roaming cats for those who intend to spay/neuter, release, and care for them. Very affordable subsidized vouchers are available for owned cats as well. Even rabbits are included in the program.
Placer SPCA receives up to 4,000 homeless animals each year. Don’t let the offspring of your beloved pet be among them. Even if you are able to find homes for “your” litter of puppies or kittens, remember the thousands of homeless animals in our community and choose to be part of the solution by not adding to the pet population.
Spaying and neutering is key to responsible pet ownership, not only to reduce the homeless pet population. It also is linked to reduced behavior issues and health benefits for the animals. The Placer SPCA also recommends on-going socialization, exercise, obedience training, microchipping, and not allowing dogs or cats to roam free, as well as regular veterinary care and vaccinations.
Residents of Placer County who have unaltered cats, pitbull/pitbull mix dogs, or rabbits are encouraged to contact the Placer SPCA’s low-cost Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) at (916) 782-7722, ext. 201 or (530) 885-7387, ext. 201.
