The Smartest Card for Back to School and More, September is National Library Card Sign Up Month
(Lincoln, California August 27, 2010) – Parents finding it harder to make sure their children have everything for back to school need help. Luckily, one of the best school supplies of all in Lincoln is a Lincoln Public Library card.
September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. The Lincoln Public Libraries support schools by providing a variety of resources. This includes homework help, online tutoring and resources, and information services, as well as with free access to music, DVDs, the internet, books and more. The Library staff works to assist and motivate children, creating lifelong readers and learners. This makes for better citizens and a healthier democracy. Early education, especially reading, is a major factor in our children’s success and the future of society.
Of course, library cards are not just for kids. Despite the rumors of demise due to the internet, a 2010 Harris poll found America Libraries continue to grow and accelerate dramatically during this economic downtown. People are looking for sources of cost-effective help in a time of crisis. In fact, 68 percent of American adults have a library card.
How does Lincoln stack up? Over 28,000 people have a Lincoln Library Card. Library users borrowed over 421,000 books and materials last fiscal year 2009-10. This is a 938% increase in just three years. 15,491 children and adults attended 303 educational and recreational programs last year, including the ever-popular early literacy program Mother Goose on the Loose. Librarians and Library Staff answered 22,560 reference questions. Patrons logged in almost 30,000 computer sessions. Many to find jobs, complete homework, and use government resources, such as applying for unemployment or e-filing income tax.
Now more than ever, Lincolnites turn to – and depend on – their libraries and librarians for information, educational resources, job search tools, computers with internet access, and, of course, books, movies and more. And all it takes is a library card.
