WJU Basketball Wins Third In a Row, Lady Warriors Fall to Menlo
Atherton, Calif. - William Jessup defeated Menlo in the first matchup between the two schools in Rocklin. Tonight the Warriors won once again, this time in double figures 70-52 over Menlo College.
In the first half, the two teams played a back and forth game. The Warriors would have a 31-28 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Warriors took a double digit lead and never looked back. The Warriors won 70-52. The Warriors won the regular season series 2-0.
For William Jessup, Jordan Wilson led the Warriors with a nineteen points. ChaRunn Jones led the Oaks with a game-high twenty one points. Marqus Crawford had eighteen points and Anthony Anderson had thirteen for the Warriors in the win. Alexander Engel had ten points and Andrew Young had eight points for the Oaks.
The Warriors shot 52.1% (25-48) from the field, 53.9% (7-13) from the three point line and was 56.5% (13-23) from the free throw line. Menlo shot 40% (18-45) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from the three point line and 58.8% (10-17) from the foul line. William Jessup's defense forced twenty Oaks turnovers scoring seventeen points off the turnovers while the Oaks defense forced thirteen turnovers by the Warriors scoring two points. The Oaks outrebounded the Warriors 36-28 but the Warriors outscored the Oaks off the bench 31-6.
The next game for William Jessup is next Thursday against CSU Maritime at the Warrior Dome. Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
Lady Warriors Fall 66-59.
Atherton (2-2) - William Jessup and Menlo played the second game of their season series in Atherton tonight. The Oaks took the first matchup between the two schools and tonight was no different as the Oaks won 66-59.
Unlike the first matchup, the first few minutes were played in a back and forth manner. The Warriors would tie the game at 7-7 on a Cassie Davidson layup with 16:13 left in the half. The Oaks would take the lead for good with 15:19 left at 9-7 on an Erika Garcia layup. The Oaks would expand their lead to double digits with 7:53 left, to make the score 25-14, on a Garcia basket. The Oaks' largest lead of the half would be eighteen at 39-21 with 3:58 left on a Sareen Ohanian basket. The Warriors would go on a half-ending 8-2 run to cut the Oaks lead to 41-29 at halftime.
In the second half, the Oaks held a double digit lead for a grand majority of the half. The Warriors would trim the Menlo lead to eight with 12:25 left on a Maria Viola basket to make the score 50-42 in favor of Menlo. The Oaks would expand their lead once again to their largest of the ballgame at nineteen on a Jolise Limcaco three pointer to make the score 62-43. William Jessup would trim the Oaks' lead to seven, at 64-57, on a Davidson basket with 1:23 left. The Warriors would add a field goal by Viola and the Oaks would add two free throws for the 66-59 final score.
For William Jessup, Davidson led the Warriors with a game high thirty points. Erika Garcia led the Oaks with eighteen points. Maria Viola had thirteen points and Taylor Borba had five points for the Warriors in the loss. Laurel Donnenwirth had ten points and three players had nine points apiece for the Oaks.
The Warriors shot 36.8% (21-57) from the field, 28.6% (4-14) from the three point line and was 92.9% (13-14) from the free throw line. Menlo shot 43.6% (24-55) from the field, 21.4% (3-14) from the three point line and 88.2% (15-17) from the foul line. William Jessup's defense forced fourteen Oaks turnovers scoring three points off the turnovers while the Oaks defense forced twenty two turnovers by the Warriors scoring sixteen points off the miscues. The Warriors outrebounded the Oaks 38-28 and the Oaks outscored the Warriors off the bench 15-5.
The next game for William Jessup is Saturday against UC Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz. Game time is set for 4 pm.
